Swan Lake First Nation and Beyond Factory Farming to demand the Province immediately stop all hog barn development

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 30, 2006
WINNIPEG, MB

Manitoba's Southern Grand Chief Chris Henderson will be hosting a Press Conference on Friday December 1, 2006, at 11:00 AM at the Winnipeg Sub-Office of the Southern Chiefs' Organization at 225 - 530 Century Street (Route 90). Grand Chief Henderson will be joined by Chief Robert Daniels of the Swan Lake First Nation and Glen Koroluk of the Beyond Factory Farming Coalition.

The parties will be calling upon the Provincial Government to immediately suspend all hog barn proposals currently in process and include them in the moratorium recently announced by the NDP government. Swan Lake First Nation is opposing a proposal by Rock 'N' Rolling Farm Ltd. to construct a 4,400 head facility one mile north of the reserve.

Currently, there are at least 17 hog barn proposals which are not covered by the moratorium on development. An online petition will also be launched calling on the government to conduct an "Open and Democratic Review of Hog Production in Manitoba" that includes the suspension of the Clean Environment Commission hearing announced for OlyWest.
