Latest Listeriosis Recall Underlines Food Safety Flaws

Problems persist two years after the Maple Leaf outbreak claimed the lives of 22 Canadians...

On May 8, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a warning to consumers that a variety of deli meat and cheese products manufactured by Zadi Foods Ltd. and distributed nationally may be contaminated with listeria.

Over 20 meat and cheese products were reported as possibly contaminated, and the company has since issued a voluntary recall.

The latest recall suggests that the flaws inherent in Canada's food safety system which were exposed by the Maple Leaf outbreak two years ago have yet to be corrected.
