How much meat to eat?
The North American diet is protein rich, and most of us could benefit to reduce our weekly meat intake. Instead of having meat twice a day, consider reducing portion sizes of meat, and make it one meal a day instead of two. In Real Food for a Change, Wayne Roberts et al suggest that meat be used as a side dish, rather than the main dish of every meal. Portion sizes will be more than adequate to fill the daily recommended amount of protein, and will encourage more use of vegetables, grains, and legumes. Rethinking meat consumption in this way also helps justify the occasional added expense of buying local, sustainably raised meats.
